“Music has changed my life. I now see the world differently because of music.”

Cello student from Oaxaca

Why music?

Music is a universal language that transcends borders, cultures, and even time. For young people coming from difficult circumstances, the transformative power of music can be life-changing. From the slums of India to the children homes of Ghana and the evacuation centres of Fukushima, music has the power to uplift, inspire, and empower. By offering a sense of community and belonging, music can help young people overcome feelings of isolation and hopelessness. Through the discipline of practice and performance, music can instill confidence and cultivate a sense of self-worth. Music has the ability to transcend social, economic, and cultural boundaries, giving young people a voice and a way to express themselves. In turn, this empowerment can help young people reach their full potential and create more hopeful futures for themselves and their communities, all around the world.

Music has an undeniable and powerful impact on our lives. It is capable of moving us emotionally, bringing us joy, happiness, and a sense of belonging. As a universal language, it has the power to embrace diversity and bring people together. However, for young people coming from difficult circumstances the transformative power of music goes far beyond the momentary satisfaction of singing or playing an instrument. For them, it can nbe truly life-changing.

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the positive impact music can have on young people, especially on those who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Researches have found that music can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are common issues for young people living in adverse conditions. Moreover, music can provide a positive way for young people to express their emotions and explore the creativity, giving them a sense of purpose and pride.

Keys of Change is an organisation committed to making a positive impact in communities worldwide through the transformative power of music. With diverse musical projects around the globe, from creating a brass band in Ecuador to showcasing a youth symphony orchestra in Ghana, Keys of Change is making a difference in the lives of countless young people. Through music education and mentorship programmess, Keys of Change provides young people with the tools to develop their creativity, self-expression, and self-confidence. The organisation’s musical projects not only foster artistic excellence but also bring communities together, promote cultural exchange, and create opportunities for social change. With the support of dedicated staff, volunteers, and community partners, Keys of Change is inspiring young musicians, creating meaningful connections, and building a world where everyone has access to the transformative power of music.

Keys of Change's journey began with a vision by founder Panos Karan, who saw the transformative power of music in the world's most remote and vulnerable communities. Through his musical travels to the Amazon, West Africa, Fukushima, and Siberia, he witnessed how music could uplift and empower even in the most challenging circumstances. Panos Karan's experiences inspired him to create Keys of Change, an organisation dedicated to bringing musical education and mentorship to marginalised communities worldwide. The vision of Keys of Change is to help shape a world where music is seen as a basic human right, and where its transformative power can be experienced by all. Panos Karan's story is a testament to the impact that one person's vision and passion for music can have on the world. The Keys of Change team continues to be inspired by that vision, working tirelessly to bring the joy of music to communities worldwide, transforming lives and creating positive social change one note at a time.
